Letter from Edward Wilson, Chief Magistrate of Police, Thurles, County Tipperary, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, expressing alarm at the considerable excitement amongst the ‘lower orders’ following the Clare Election and that the prevention of outrage is due to the ‘perfect obedience the people pay their Clergy’. Noting that the mayors of both Cashel and Fethard were stoned which resulted in the police opening fire on crowds and adding that the enquiry into the events in Cashel has been postponed to allow evidence to be gathered. |

Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Carrick on Shannon, [County Leitrim], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, noting that the jury who acquitted those accused of murdering Capt Cox consisted of eight protestants and four catholics; criticising the bad management of the trials against those accused of rioting in Ballinamore, [County Leitrim]; noting that [Daniel] O’Connell is to have a public entry into Sligo and that the sheriff of that town has called for reinforcements. |
