Affidavits of Capt Johnston Morton, captain in the Leitrim Militia and his son Thomas Morton, Cloonara parish, County Roscommon, reporting that they were attacked by a gang of twenty men wearing white bands on their hats and also had their house plundered. Also affidavit of John Irwin, Bryan Lannon and John Dolan, Carroward, County Roscommon, stating that they are labourers and watchmen on Edward Mills’ demesne at Fairymount; claiming that they were beaten by a gang because they refused to comply with a Rockite mandate to contribute money. Also covering letter from Edward Mills, magistrate, 8 Lower Rutland Street, Dublin, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, seeking to have a party of constables stationed at Fairymount. Also letter from TS Ireland, Dublin, to Maj Warburton, arguing that the present station at Beechwood is more suitable than Fairymount and adding that two constables are protecting Mill’s house during his absence. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Dublin Castle, to Gower, observing that Capt Ireland has agreed to the present barrack arrangement for the coming year and that consequently it is not possible to comply with Mill’s request.

Letter from James Hogg, Gillstown, Strokestown, [County Roscommon], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that Maj Warburton has been directed to provide him with two constables to proceed to Liverpool to escort Daniel O’Neill to Roscommon Gaol; adding that Widow Ward, widow of the deceased is unable to contribute to the expenses of so doing. Also related letter from Robert Atkinson, Strokestown, to Maj Warburton, noting that the widow is in distress. Includes annotation from Gower, stating that the expenses should be defrayed.

Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Roscommon, [County Roscommon], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, noting that the trial of the suspected murderer of Capt Cox has taken place but that the jury have yet to give a verdict despite being clearly directed by Baron Smith; adding that it is reported that one of the jury and the accused are both free masons; noting in a post script that the catholics on the jury are determined not to come to a verdict and that both the jury and prisoner are being sent to Carrick on Shannon.

Letter from Henryy Alcock, magistrate for Waterford, Tipperary, Kilkenny and Wexford, Waterford City, to William Lamb, [Chief Secretary], seeking advice on the terms of bail granted to two individuals, Charles Henry Archdale and Henry Langley, who had arranged a duel but who were arrested prior to the duel taking place; noting that following their release the two men again engaged in a duel in County Carlow and enquiring if the bail bond is therefore forfeited.

Letters from Robert Atkinson, Newry, [County Armagh], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary], believing that there is a plot amongst catholics in his area to murder him; making allegations against a number of individuals and public houses in the town including John Russell, and attorney, who is associating with the ‘Council of Liberators’ or ‘Mr O’Connell’s Gang of Assassins’ and who was implicated in the 1798 Rebellion; also mentioning Daniel Jennings, John Trainor, Mr Barrett, the Collector of Excise, James Tayler; making a number of deranged claims and for example stating that he publically declared in Newry that the newly constructed catholic church would be converted into a protestant church.

Letter from J Irvine, Touragoe [Tanrego, County Sligo], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary], reporting on a riot at the Fair of Ardnaglass, [County Sligo] during which Constable Neal and his sub constables fired on the mob; claiming that the police acted with great forbearance and were assisted by Mr Wood; adding that the riot was not motivated by religion as both sides were catholic but suggesting that those attacked had fallen foul of the Rockite Laws.
