Letter from Sam Croker, Local Inspector, Dungarvan, County Waterford, to Maj Miller, Inspector General, reporting on the shooting of Patrick Coffey while attempting to avoid arrest by the constabulary at Ballylynch, County Waterford. Noting that Coffey was accused of the murder of a man named called Brien and that the constables involved in the incident were John Maher, Andrew White and Thomas Hill, all stationed at Comragh; observing that a prejudiced jury found that the shooting was not justified. Also covering letter from Miller, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary. Also copy of the depositions by witnesses to the arrest and shooting of Coffey, with accompanying list of the jury members and their verdict that the shooting was uncalled for. Also letter signed by three magistrates, Dungarvan, to Gower, concerning the granting of bail to the constable.

Letter from Samson Carter, Nenagh, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, enclosing a resolution [extant] from a meeting of catholic clergy and gentry at Nenagh calling for the adjournment of a meeting of the ‘Friends of Civil and Religious Liberty’ to be held in Nenagh; noting that this resolution was obeyed by the population and that this has resulted in calm. Includes copy of the resolution signed by six priests and six laymen, warning the population not to imitate the savage conduct of the Brunswickers or to engage in boycotts of protestants, ‘Prevent no Man from working; and, above all, cherish and respect the kind-hearted, liberal Protestant’.

Letter signed by four magistrates of the barony of Kinnattalloon, Conna, Fermoy, County Cork, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, seeking instructions on how to deal with the large processions being organized in Tipperary. Noting that a procession was held at Lisforney at which individuals wearing green uniforms and badges in their caps marched through the locality and noting that a further march from Tipperary to Waterford has been organized. Letter signed by JW Edgar, H Gumbleton, William Kirby and Henry H Peard.

Letter from Samson Carter, Cashel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that he met with the magistrates at Roscrea concerning the prevalence of large processions in that area which is contributing to the spirit of insubordination. Noting that the protestant shopkeepers are refusing to sell green ribbons and ornaments to those involved in the processions and that a feeling of animosity based on religious and political differences prevails. Adding that he has proposed that prudent protestants and catholics be sworn in as special constables to patrol with the police under the plan of ‘Watch and Ward’. Reporting that the police were called upon to protect Mr O’Keeffe in removing his crops near Borrisoleigh.

Letter from Charles S Cahill, magistrate, Riverstown, Corofin, County Clare, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, complaining that another magistrate called out the police and army from Clare Castle to provide protection and sanction for the inaugural Brunswick Club meeting in Ennis. Claiming that the club’s objectives are ‘directly opposed to the principles by which they pretend to be actuated’.

Letter from Samson Carter, Cashel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting on the failure to attract sufficient numbers of protestants to act as special constables in Roscrea. Noting that nightly police patrols has reduced the incident of window breaking. Reporting on a land dispute on the estate of Lord Kirkwall involving Michael Mara and under tenants and enclosing affidavits of Andrew and Mary Long and Patrick Kennedy reporting attacks on their houses. Observing that O’Connell’s proposal contained in his address to the ‘People of Tipperary’, for ‘Pacificators and Regulators in each Parish subdivided into hundreds’, will further unite the peasantry.

Letter from Samson Carter, Cashel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting on heretofore concealed outrages around Bansha, [County Tipperary] and his meeting with Edmond O’Ryan of Bansha Castle and Earl Llandaff where the possibility of nightly patrols by the constabulary aided by local farmers was proposed. Also information of Patrick Ryan of Clashquirk and John Bourke of Lisnagaule providing eyewitness accounts of attacks on houses in their locality.

Letter from Samson Carter, Nenagh, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting that the crowd assembled in Nenagh on Sunday dispersed without incident following the issue of a countermand and also noting the abandonment of a proposal to establish a Liberal Club in contradistinction to the recently established Brunswick Club, owing to fears that I would lead to mischief. Stating that local magistrates believe that a specific magistrate is not required for Nenagh but recommending that a troop of cavalry be stationed in the town, adding that this proposal is supported by Francis Prittie, MP. Also memorandum mentioning Maj Gen Edward Blakeney.

Letter from William Nash, Chief Constable, Roscrea, [County Tipperary], to Maj Carter, reporting on an incident of house levelling connected to a land dispute which occurred at Oldcastle; noting that Cornelius Mullally witnessed Andrew and Partick Martin and John Delany, knocking down a wall in his partially constructed house; adding that Martin is a leader of a faction and that through the influence of influential catholics the magistrates have postponed the case and that Mullally will most likely be bought off; enclosing copies of threatening notices left at the house of David Maxwell. Letters from Charles Coote, Bellamount Forest, [County Cavan], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting that anonymous notices have been posted in Cootehill calling for a meeting to be held at the Court House to establish a Brunswick Club and seeking advice on how he is to respond. Also noting that the membership subscription has been reduced to 2s 6d thereby encouraging a large body of orangemen and protestants to join.
