SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Samson Carter, Roscrea, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, providing a detailed account of outrages in each of the baronies of Tipperary. Referring in particular to an incident at [Donaskeigh], near Cashel which was attended by the sheriff accompanied by 30 constables and 60 soldiers from the 76 Regiment and animosity against those who have joined the Brunswick Clubs and boycotts of protestants. Noting that potato harvesters working for Rev Gabbet were forced to quit their work by a crowd of 500 persons. Mentioning the attempts of the priests to dissuade the boycotters and O’Connell’s address proposing the setting up of a system of ‘Pacificators and Regulators’ for each parish.

Letter from Samson Carter, Cashel, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, responding to accusations of impartiality made in a memorial against him and the magistrates at Nenagh Petty Sessions; mentioning that Rev Barry and Mr Meagher have been most active ‘in drawing the attention of Peasantry’, against members of the Brunswick Clubs; observing that attorneys are frequently employed by catholics in criminal cases. Includes memorial signed by 61 inhabitants of Nenagh, complaining that Carter took the information of two unworthy characters, named Kane and [Kenna] in a private chamber instead of open court, claiming that some prisoners were to be charged under the Whiteboy Act; also accusing magistrates of being involved in the Brunswick Clubs. Also affidavits of John Kane and Patrick Kind of Nenagh, concerning the robbery of their house by a large gang, some of whom were identified by Kind; noting that a man named Michael Madden is in custody charged with the murder of Patrick Kane, brother of John. Letter from Samson Carter, Ballybay, [County Monaghan], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting that the lower classes of protestants or orangemen are more likely to cause outrage [in Monaghan] than the catholics, who are under the control of agents who are seeking political advantage; noting that agents for the Catholic Association carefully monitored the proceedings of the petty sessions but were not permitted to plead in cases; stating that Samuel Gray intends to use his influence on the masters of lodges and the yeomanry to avoid violence, that the chief constables have been instructed to watch the leads of both parties prior to Mr Lawless’ trial and that he intends to meet with Rev McCusker, catholic priest. Also affidavit of Francis Cassidy, claiming that he was shot at by three men, named Patrick and Samuel Gibson and John Timlin, outside Aghnamullen, County Monaghan. Also draft letter from Gower, to Edward Richardson, magistrate, noting that government will not interfere in the assault case put forward by Cassidy.
