File of letters from Maj William Miller, Inspector General of Police, Fermoy, relating to application for superannuation allowance made by Subconstable Thomas Woods, having been accidentally shot in Toomevara Barrack |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Three letters from Maj William Miller, Inspector General of Police [in Munster], Fermoy, [County Cork], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, relating to application for superannuation allowance made by Subconstable Thomas Woods of Toomevara, County Tipperary, as a result of his ‘being shot through the Thigh in the Constabulary Barrack there by the accidental discharge of a Carbine, which a little boy had been permitted to take in his hand’. Miller states that as the wound was not received on active duty, he fears that Woods may not be entitled to such an allowance, but as his leg was subsequently amputated, ‘this misfortune will preclude the possibility of his earning a livelihood by labour’, with annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene. Final letter from Miller forwards enclosed memorial of Woods to the Lords of the Treasury [not present]. |
