Three letters from John Macan, Assistant Barrister of the West Riding of County Cork, writing from 37 Gloucester Street, Dublin, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, outlining a number of suggestions in relation to the amendment of the Division of County Cork Act, 1823, in particular, the necessity for a court interpreter, ‘because I am convinced, from my experience both in that County and at the Bar, that the Irish language is, in all those Courts, the great instrument of perjury – that it’s continuance seriously obstructs the investigation of truth, and therefore the due administration of justice, and interferes with the improvement of the peasantry and the good order and peace of the entire country’, with annotation by Leveson Gower stating ‘I trust the evil complained of is daily becoming less pressing’. Also draft letter of reply from the Chief Secretary's Office, informing Macan that his submissions will be considered in due course. |
