File of papers relating to investigation into charges made against Chief Constable Capt John Burke, County Wexford, for violent conduct at a meeting held 20 January 1829 to establish a Brunswick Club in the county. Includes letters, memoranda and interdepartmental notes, from correspondents such as: Sir John Harvey, Inspector General of Police [for Leinster], Portarlington, [County Laois]; Henry Hamilton, Subinspector for County Wexford, Wexford; Wexford magistrate Robert Hughes; Lt Gen Sir John Byng, Commander in Chief of the Irish army; Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary; William Gregory, Under Secretary; and Burke himself, who also previously served as a Lieutenant with the 16th Lancers. Includes letter from Harvey to Gregory, outlining his report on the evidence of the case, and referring to several enclosures, including printed notice of the meeting allegedly attended by Burke, as well as documents numbered 1-7 [with note stating that items 1-4 support the case of the prosecution], namely: no 1 deposition of witness John Usher of Landscape; no 2 deposition of witness Rev William Archdall of Tintern; no 3 deposition of witness Nicholas Gifford of Ballysap; no 4 transcript of questions and answers put to Glascott and Alcock; no 5 depositions outlining evidence for the defence, in 6 parts; no 6 letter from Gregory to Harvey, forwarding 3 letters from Glascott and Alcock, Fethard, [County Tipperary]; and no 7 letter from Burke to Harvey, sent after the close of the enquiry.
