File of papers relating to memorial of inhabitants of Killeshandra [or Killashandra], County Cavan, to the Lords Justices, seeking payment of debts due to them by Chief Constable Thomas L Raymond, who is now confined in Cavan gaol as an insolvent debtor. Contains list of names of 7 inhabitants, their occupation, and the amount they loaned Raymond. Annotation on reverse by Lt Gen Sir John Byng, Commander in Chief of the Irish army, referring memorial to Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General of Police for Ulster. Includes letters from: D’Arcy, Belfast, [County Antrim], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that he has only recently been informed of Raymond’s imprisonment and that has requested an investigation by the subinspector of the county [John MacLeod], with enclosed copy of referral letter he received from Byng, Dublin Castle; and D’Arcy to Gregory, forwarding report he received from Chief Constable, Pay Clerk and Subinspector MacLeod, Cavan, contesting the claims outlined in the memorial, and stating that Raymond ‘is now at liberty, having made arrangements for the liquidation of His debts, satisfactory to all His Creditors’. Further states Percy wishes to land at Dunleary [Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin]. Additional private letter from Leveson Gower, London, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, informing him that he has not seen Sir Charles [William] Flint [Resident Secretary, Irish Office] since he received Singleton’s letter, and requesting that he communicate its contents to the Lord Justices.
