SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from [Michael] Ferrar, Belfast, [County Antrim], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, informing him that Daniel Walen, son of John Walen, a convict in New South Wales [Australia], is on his way to Cork Gaol, prior to his journey to join his father. Also states that Henry Walen has gotten married since he received permission to join his father and brother, and enquires if she will be permitted to accompany him. Annotation on reverse by Dr Edward Trevor, [superintendent and medical inspector of convicts], Cove [Cobh], stating that there is no fund to pay for Mrs Walen’s journey, and that ‘it would be improper to send the female in a Ship taking out male convicts’. Evidence indicates witnesses accused Sterling of making a derogatory remark about the King [George IV].
