SCOPE & CONTENT:

Memorial of James Miller, Listowel, [County Kerry], to the ‘Duke of Cumberland’ [?Henry Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland, Lord Lieutenant], stating that he currently receives a superannuation allowance of £50 per annum since 1 January 1827, following his discharge as Chief Constable of the Barony of Clanwilliam, County Tipperary, for ill health. Requests to also be granted a pension for his service, or else permission ‘to dispose of this annuity during his life to a person who is ready to purchase it’. Additional letter from Miller to William Gregory, Under Secretary, requesting copy of official letter awarding him said allowance, so that he may prove his right to the purchaser, with annotation on reverse by Gregory stating ‘I will not be made a party to any such transaction’.

File of papers relating to recommendation by the Board of Health that Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital cease the admission of fever patients at the expense of the government, that its accounts be closed as of 4 March 1829, and that any remaining patients be transferred elsewhere. Includes: letter from Dr Francis Barker, secretary, General Board of Health, [Dublin], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding account of the hospital for the quarter ended 5 January 1829 [not present], and outlining above recommendation in light of a growing number of vacant beds in the Dublin fever hospitals over the past year; memorial of the physicians, surgeons and students of the School of Physic attached to the University of Dublin [Trinity College Dublin], contesting the closure, with c140 signatures; letter from Barker to Gregory, acknowledging receipt of same, and stating that although the School of Physic is ‘a highly respectable body acting for useful National purposes [it] cannot in the humble judgement of the Board, have any claim on a temporary charitable fund’; and letter from H Nalty, Assistant Registrar, Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital, to Gregory, forwarding 2 additional memorials contesting the closure, from 7 ladies of the administration department of the House of Mercy, Baggot Street, as well as the householders of the eastern side of Dublin city, containing c150 signatures, some with corresponding addresses.
