Petition of Patrick Ruane and Thomas Durkan, Coolcarney, Ballina, [County Mayo], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining of the want of petty sessions in Ballina and seeking redress; lamenting that the conduit of local justice is ‘totally neglected’ and the local population as a result are greatly disadvantaged; listing the local magistrates in the immediate district and lamenting over the cumbersome process of getting even an ordinary case tried, such as one for the recovery of wages; suggesting that the present office holders should be reproved by government and more efficient persons appointed in their stead. Also letter from Col A Knox Gore, Ballina House, [County Mayo], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, stating that his magisterial duties have been interrupted by the necessity of attending on those suffering from starvation in the locality; stressing he has met with another magistrate [Howly] and resolved to ensure that the public are no longer deprived of the petty sessions.
