Includes letter from Sir John Harvey, Inspector General of Police [for Leinster], Portarlington, [County Laois], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, recommending their dismissal. Also includes letter from John Henderson, enclosing 6 documents relating to the outcome of the investigation, namely: letter from William Wray, Stamullen, to unnamed recipient, requesting him to enclose 17s 7d in ‘the pay docket for this month, being the amount of a bill for Lodging money etc. which I sent in last month’; letter from the brothers Wray, to unnamed recipient, stating they have been called to attend an inquiry at Navan relating to their lodging of money to Capt Henderson; letter from John Henderson, Navan, to Harvey, outlining the circumstances of the case, and seeking an investigation; memorial of 6 chief constables of County Meath, to Harvey, claiming the Wrays’ accusations are ‘groundless’, and requesting that they be reprimanded; 2 documents outlining William and James Wray’s expense claims, 1823-1827, and copy of resolution passed at a Petty Sessions meeting held at Navan, 9 February 1829, finding the Wrays’ claims to be untrue. Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, [superintendent and medical inspector of convicts], reporting the outcome of a conflict between John Speer, surgeon of the hulk ‘Essex’ at Kingstown [Dún Laoghaire], and John Lamb, Keeper, with enclosed statements

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, [superintendent and medical inspector of convicts], Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, reporting the outcome of a conflict between John Speer, surgeon of the hulk ‘Essex’ at Kingstown [Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin], and John Lamb, Keeper of the prison. Trevor states that Speer claimed that Lamb used offensive language towards him, but upon investigation, he found that Speer also ‘used most provoking and insulting language, and subversive of good order, particularly in a Prison’. Encloses copies of 2 letters he received from Speer and Lamb, outlining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Annotation on reverse by Gregory stating ‘inform the two Parties, that a repetition of such conduct, will be the removal of both them from their situations’.

Letter from Maj William Miller, Inspector General of Police [in Munster], Fermoy, [County Cork], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, requesting permission to withdraw continual police protection from the residence of Mrs Weston and Mrs Grace at Farm Hill, County Waterford, following a burglary there in May 1828. States this crime was committed by a man named Dorney, ‘who then infested the borders of Tipperary and Waterford but who, with two of his Associates, being taken in Arms in July last were Capitally Convicted, and have since been transported for life.’

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Lord O’Neill [Charles O’Neill, 1st Earl O’Neill, Postmaster General], Col of the Antrim Militia, Symmons’ Hotel, Lower James’ Street, [Dublin], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, forwarding list of militia men who wish to join the police force [not present]. Annotated on reverse by Leveson Gower, requesting that O’Neill’s recommendations be forwarded to Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General of Police [for Ulster], with subsequent letter from Sir Charles [William] Flint, Resident Secretary, Irish Office, London, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding same. Also letter from D’Arcy, Belfast, [County Antrim], to Gregory, informing him that ‘the magistrates of every County in this Province uniformly avail themselves of the power conferred on them by Act of Parliament of making out Lists… of persons to fill vacancies as they arise… I doubt, therefore, whether any opportunity can present itself of enrolling the men in question at any time in this establishment.’ Annotation on reverse by Gregory stating ‘this is a very decided refusal on the part of Major D’Arcy to comply with the wishes of the Lords Justices’, and requests to know if such appointments are routinely made ‘as a matter of course’ or if the men are ‘properly qualified’.
