Memorial of John Dane [Deane], Skea [Skeagh], near Bailieboro [Bailieborough], County Cavan, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, requesting advance of a measure of compensation following an attack on his property and the killing of his daughter; complaining that on the night of 15th of November 1830 his house came under attack by an armed party during which one of his daughters was murdered; expressing his determination to remain on his property despite it being the former scene of an eviction and affirming that he gave evidence against five persons for the attack at the Spring assizes of Cavan. File of documents arising from proposals for appointment of a successor to the late Edward Rankin, Chief Constable of Macroom in County Cork. Includes letter from Sir Augustus Warren, magistrate, Cove [Cobh, County Cork], to Maj William Miller, [Inspector General of Police in Munster], recommending the appointment of Mr Browne of Ballincollig [County Cork] to the post of chief constable in Macroom, in place of Chief Constable Rankin, now deceased; stressing his own knowledge of Browne and emphasising that man’s capacity for ‘pleasing all the magistrates’ of the district. Also includes letter from Miller, Fermoy, [County Cork], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, admitting Browne’s qualifications for the post in Macroom but adding the reservation that his father lives near that town. Also includes letter from Miller to Gosset, alluding to an officer named Burke being sent to his district; expressing some disquiet over the proposed arrangement since the man was previously removed from the constabulary and is to be now reinstated; suggesting that Burke be returned to his own province and a successor be found for Rankin ‘by ballet’.

Letter from Easter Campion, widow, Enniscorthy, [County Wexford], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, enclosing a memorial to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, requesting a measure of financial support or pension; stating she lost her husband in 1817 while he was in service with the 100th Regiment [of Foot] in North America, and her only son died from the result of a fracture to the skull inflicted while he was in the town of Enniscorthy on the 12th of July 1830; lamenting that the two men deemed responsible for the attack on her son, Thomas Kenelly and Richard Sinnot, evaded transportation for life on account of an act of clemency shown them by the Lord Lieutenant; with supporting signatures beneath from F MacCartney MD and Archibald H Jacob, magistrate for counties Wexford and Carlow.
