Letter from Robert Peel, Home Secretary, Whitehall, [London], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, referring to enclosed memorial of Edward James Gray seeking appointment to the police force [not present]. Annotation on reverse by Gregory stating that Maj Thomas D’Arcy, [Inspector General of Police for Ulster], should be directed that ‘if this man is qualified he is to be appointed’. Also letter from D’Arcy, Belfast, [County Antrim], to Gregory, informing him that Gray was previously employed in the police in counties Donegal and Fermanagh, but was dismissed for ‘continued drunkenness’, and was later imprisoned for robbery. Also copy of blank printed form for the ‘examination of a candidate for the situation of a police patrol’, seeking details such as candidate’s name, by whom they were recommended, physical description, occupation and previous military service, as well as notes relating to their character and physical examination. |

Letter from Thomas [Philips] Vokes, [chief magistrate of police], Limerick, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing copy of 2 letters he received from him and Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, in May and November 1828, requesting him not to fill current vacancies in the Peace Preservation Police, ‘with the view to the gradual reduction of that Force’. States there are now 4 vacancies in the force, which has ‘created considerable confusion and dissatisfaction to the Magistrates’ and requests that the order be withdrawn in light of a number of recent outrages in the county which include ‘several homicides, burglaries, [and] seizing arms’. |

Letter from Dr G Fitzgerald, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, informing him that he has received an application from Garret Fitzgerald, a crown witness in the trial for the murder of a man named Mara, seeking payment of his weekly allowance of £1, which was due the previous day. Also states that a weekly allowance of 15s is due the following day to another witness, Edward McCaffrey, and that both men are usually paid by Maj [Samson] Carter. Also letter from Carter, Ballibay, [County Monaghan], to Gregory, referring to annexed copies of receipts demonstrating his advance payment of the witnesses up to 27 February, and stating that before he received his letter, he had already issued another advance payment to cover the witnesses’ expenses until 13 March 1829. Additional letter from Fitzgerald to Gregory, confirming same. |
