SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Sir John Harvey, Inspector General of Police [for Leinster], Portarlington, [County Laois], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding 4 documents, relating to disciplinary measures taken against Constable Thomas Gill of Broadway [County Wexford], for drunkenness, and Subconstable Joseph Cooke, for gross insubordination, namely: letter from Gill to Capt Hamilton, Subinspector of County Wexford, outlining his report on his behaviour; copy of resolutions passed at a meeting of the Petty Sessions at Killinick, 24 February 1829, relating to charges brought against Cooke and recommending his dismissal; and memorial of Gill to Harvey, referring to enclosed supporting certificate signed by 5 magistrates. Harvey concurs with the magistrates’ recommendation that Gill’s rank be reduced from constable to subconstable as punishment, but suggests that, instead of his dismissal, Cooke be suspended from the service with loss of pay, which ‘would be an adequate Punishment for an Inferior having forgotten the respect due to his superior when he sees him in a state of intoxication’.
