Includes letter from Sir Anthony Hart, Lord Chancellor, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, dated ‘Friday night [13 February 1829], ½ past 12’, informing him that ‘the Surgeon General [Sir Philip Crampton] has this moment call’d here to inform me that his Carriage was attacked in the way home thro’ College Green by a large collection of persons shouting no popery and himself and family put in great Peril by stones thrown at it’, stating that the crowd was largely made up of collegians, and that there were no policemen nearby. Two letters from Henry Richard Dawson, Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Deanery House, [Dublin], to Col Gardiner and an unnamed recipient, relating to the conduct of a catholic priest, Rev Walsh, who married a protestant solider, Richard George of the 53rd Regiment, to Elizabeth Brambrick, a Roman Catholic, at Castlecomer [County Kilkenny], 1 May 1828. Encloses extract of private letter he received from Lt Col Sir William De Bathe of the 53rd Regiment, forwarding marriage certificate issued by Walsh, and stating that George ‘was Joined under peculiar circumstances. The Woman was with child by him and consequently more than usually anxious to be married in any way’. Also letter from Lt Col [John Paulet] Earl of Wiltshire, Military Secretary, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, highlighting that Walsh ‘acted not only improperly, but also contrary to Law’. |
