Letter from James Cuming, [steward and providore of the] House of Industry, [Dublin], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, requesting that he and his wife [Catherine Cuming, housekeeper of the institution] be moved to a more suitable situation in the country. Encloses copy of letter he wrote to [Maj] Thomas Newcomen Edgeworth, Governor, suggesting that they be moved to the new Lunatic Asylum at Belfast [County Antrim], and outlining his reasons for his request, ‘the Physicians… have given it as their opinion that a change of air from Dublin to the country is now absolutely necessary to the hopes of a continuance of good health to me, after my severe and long sufferings from indisposition at the House of Industry, where I have served Fourteen years frequently exposed to Fever, and contagion, in all its forms’. Additional private letter from Edgeworth to unnamed recipient, requesting that Mr Mullen be appointed to Belfast instead of Cuming, stating ‘in doing so believe me I have no object but a wish that the new asylum should be made useful in its fullest extent’.
