File of papers relating to memorial of Maj Creagh of the County Clare Militia, Newmarket on Fergus, to [Henry Paget], Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, stating that 2 men, Cpl John Cullen and Capt George Rice, were moved to the Cork preservation police when the Clare militia was reduced and subsequently dismissed by Maj [Samson] Carter, and requesting that they be appointed as subconstables of police. Includes letter from Carter to unknown recipient, testifying to the good character of the men, as well as letter from Maj William Miller, Inspector General of Police [in Munster], Fermoy, [County Cork], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, informing him that he is willing to take on Cullen and Rice ‘provided they be qualified according to the existing Regulations’. Includes sets of papers numbered 1-4 relating to each man, with covering note by Miller, explaining the reason for their rejection, namely: no 1 – letter, memorial and related character references of Lewis Gunning, with previous service as a subconstable in the Barony of Middle Third, and with the 3rd Regiment of Foot, ineligible due to ‘being 50 years of age’ [see also CSO/RP/1829/567]; no 2 – letter and memorial of Bernard Devin, with previous service as a subconstable in the Barony of Middle Third, and with the 16th Regiment of Foot, ineligible as he is ‘unable to read or write’; no 3 – letter, memorial and related character references of John Lennon, with previous service as a subconstable in the Barony of Middle Third, and with the 53rd Regiment of Foot, ineligible as he is ‘above 50 years of age and in bad health’; and no 4 – memorial of Francis McGuire, Roscrea, deemed unfit as he has been ‘lame from Infancy’, but with a suggestion that ‘having been a Schoolmaster, a Recommendation to the Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor of Ireland’ might be a more suitable position for him [see also CSO/RP/1829/1205].

Letter from chief magistrates Frederick Darley, John C Graves and Henry Charles Sirr, Head Office of Police, [Dublin], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, forwarding copies of their correspondence with the fourth division of police, numbered 1-4, relating to the ability of Alderman Fleming to discharge his duties as a magistrate, namely: no 4 letter from C Tod, secretary, Head Office of Police, to Fleming, referring to his public refusal to discharge a duty assigned to him and informing him that they will report same to the government if he does not furnish a satisfactory explanation; no 3 letter from Joseph Gabbett, College Street Police Office, to the magistrates of the Head Office of Police, referring to Fleming’s refusal to accompany the Lord Lieutenant [Henry Paget] to Kingstown [Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin]; no 2 letter from magistrates of the Head Office of Police to Fleming, directing him ‘to make use of the horse they send, and accompany the Police Cavalry at the head of the Procession’; and no 1 letter from James Duncan, Head Office of Police, to the magistrates of the fourth division, informing him that Fleming is expected to accompany the Police Cavalry on horseback. Also covering note by Leveson Gower stating ‘I have had a verbal explanation from Ald[erma]n Fleming which appeared to me satisfactory insomuch as he states his inability to ride’.
