File of papers relating to outrages committed on the Newry Canal at County Armagh. Includes letter from Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General of Police [for Ulster], Armagh, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding original and copies of reports from chief constable David Patton, Portadown, relating to a violent attack on a boat of potatoes on the River Bann on 6 May 1829 [see also CSO/RP/OR/1829/155], as well as a violent clash between Protestants and Catholics and attack on the nearby home of Arthur McArdle at Ballywilly on 1 June 1829. Also encloses anonymous letter addressed to ‘the honerable [sic] Gentlemen of the Beanch [sic] [and] Mr Thomas Joyce Drumeland Hill’, outlining a number of objections against the price and exportation of potatoes counties Down and Armagh. Additional letter from D’Arcy, Belfast, [County Antrim], to Gregory, forwarding report from Patton, relating to another breach on the Newry Canal between Knockbridge [County Louth] and Gilford, near Tandragee [County Armagh] on 3 June 1829, ‘by which a very considerable quantity of water made its escape’.
