Letter from Lord Doneraile [?Hayes St Ledger, 3rd Viscount Doneraile], Doneraile, [County Cork], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, informing him that in light of information received by the Doneraile magistrates, a number of men composed of police under chief constable Arthur Crossley, mounted police under Maj William Miller, Inspector General of Police in Munster at Fermoy, as well as number of local military detachments, an attempt was made to arrest of John Magner and Charles Daly for the recent conspiracy to murder Messrs Creagh [Capt Michael Creagh, High Sheriff of County Cork], [George Bond] Lowe and [Rear Admiral Henry] Evans. Describes how Magner and Daly were involved in a shootout with the police, during which Lowe shot and killed Magner, and Daly escaped. Claims that the operation failed because of the poor state of the horse police in the county, but states that subconstable John Delman, who was severely wounded, conducted himself with propriety throughout, and is deserving of ‘some mark of favour’. |
