Letter from magistrate Sir Charles Coote, Bellamont Forest [County Cavan], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding notice recently posted in Cootehill addressed to local Orangemen warning of the dangers of ‘Popery’, and containing lines of poetry relating to the death of the Duke of York [Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany], ending in the lines, ‘Let a Papist have sway and his King he’ll betray / Bind him fast in a chain and he’s loyal again’. Informs him that a large meeting of the Brunswick Club is to take place the following week, and expresses his ‘apprehensions of some serious breach of the peace’. Annotation on reverse by Lt Gen Sir John Byng, Commander in Chief of the Irish army, stating that he can send troops to Cootehill on the day in question if necessary. |
