Includes memorial from Stack to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of lack of response to his application for relief and seeking investigation of claim, 1 July 1824. Also includes memorial from Stack to Wellesley, complaining of inadequate compensation for labour in assisting with the prosecution of James Quin and Hugh Collins of Newtownsandes ‘for administrating Unlawful Oaths for which they had been transported for life’; makes reference to poverty of family and protests at being ‘thrown upon the World exposed to the merciless fury of an Insatiable and lawless peasantry’, 9 June 1824. Encloses letter from Smith, Maylor Street, Cork, County Cork, to the Earl of Bathurst [Henry Bathurst, 3rd earl Bathurst, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies] requesting help in securing some measure of aid from government. Recounts a sequence of misfortunate events including an accident while in service with the 9th Regiment of Foot on the isle of Martinique, the failure of a glass manufacturing concern in Cork, and the loss of savings invested with a merchant ‘who died of a fever’ there. |

Encloses copy letter from Thomas Finlay, register and paymaster, Foundling Hospital, to the magistrates, conveying their application on behalf of the infant will be considered in due course by the governors; he adds they ‘are precluded by the Act of Parliament from admitting any child unless accompanied by necessary certificate and on payment of [five] Pounds’. |

Petition of William Swanton, high constable and collector, Gortnagrough, County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting extension of financial aid due to personal losses incurred through devaluation of currency received as ‘Collector of the Public Money for the West Division of the Barony of West Carbery’. Refers to the collection of notes issued by the banking houses of Messrs Leslie and of Stephen and James Roche, who later declared bankruptcy, and counts the refusal of same by the county treasurer as ‘a fatality which he could not foresee’.
