Also letter from John Morgan, Chief Constable, Corofin, [County Clare], to Warburton, reporting on an attack on the constabulary by a crowd of over 200 persons while they were attempting to arrest a man named O’Brien but adding that they did not open fire; adding that the post master has been threatening because he gave shelter to the police during the incident. Also covering letters from George Warburton, Inspector General, Limerick and Ennis, [County Clare], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary. Letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Castlegar, [County Galway], to A Johnston, praising him for his zealous exertions and the conduct of the police in supressing the riot at Dromahair, [County Leitrim]; discussing the merits or otherwise of moving the chief constable from Drumkeerin to Dromahair or Manorhamilton. Also related covering letter from Warburton, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting the influence which the magistrates are exerting and the need for additional constables in County Leitrim. Also memorandum from Gower offering an opinion that it might not be judicious to attempt to put down every display of party feeling after the election in Clare and noting that the proclamation which has been issued is merely a declaration of the law.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Affidavit of James Renolds, claiming that he witnessed an armed crowd gathered in the mountains between Ballinamore, County Leitrim and Swanlinbar, County Cavan, whom he believes had intended to murder the protestants at Swanlinbar and had purchased pitchforks and scythes in Drumshambo for that purpose; includes endorsement from Bartholomew Warburton. Also covering letters from Warburton, Swanlinbar, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, describing how his attempt to arrest the perpetrators of the Macken, [County Fermanagh] murders in the mountains bordering County Leitrim were foiled by a vast crowd which was signalled and summoned together by organised yelling.

Affidavit of William Walsh, County Limerick, describing how he was accidently shot when a [policeman’s] pistol went off during a disagreement between himself and Michael Galahoe over who had found it on the road. Also letter from WP Miller, Chief Constable, [Kilfinane, County Limerick], to Maj William Miller, reporting that Walsh was shot at Anglesborogh. Also letter from William Massy, magistrate, Stagdale [Lodge], [County Limerick], to William Miller, noting that Walsh was reluctant to tell the truth, fearing that Galahoe would ‘come to trouble’. Noting that unrest still exists in Mr Synge’s area and recalling his suggestion that Capt Drought’s services be extended to Tipperary or failing that to take charge of Clare. Includes annotation from Gower noting that Osborne is to be retained in his current district.
