Copied extracts from reports from chief constables and sub inspectors in counties Clare, Galway, Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo, including Tabuleau, Townsend, Mahon, Royse, Carr, Molony, Capt Armstong, Brown, Bulfin, Curtis and Capt Kelly; reporting on outrages in their districts including the shooting of a man called Grady in a faction fight at Ballinacally Fair; attack on John Crow, County Clare by a crowd calling themselves ‘Terry Alts’ who pulled down his house and ordered him to quit his property; an attack on the coast guard watch house at Costelloe Bay, Outerard during which an assailant called King was shot by the Mr O’Brien, chief boat man; beating to death of Gildea in Prosperous and Thady Dowd at Headford Fair; threatening notices including a ‘Terry Alt’ notice signed in blood; mutilation of cattle and destruction of crops. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from [Robert Edward King, 1st Viscount] Lorton, Rockingham [House, County Roscommon], [probably to Maj Warburton], inviting him to attend a meeting of magistrates in Elphin, [County Roscommon] to discuss the increasing number of outrages in the county. Also printed notice announcing the meeting to be attended by magistrates and landed proprietors. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Castlegar, [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, suggesting that he announce Mr Crossly’s appointment after the meeting; regretting that the meeting has not been confined to magistrates as large, mixed assemblies rarely bring about good results; discussing the deployment of the mounted police; noting that the Rockites now operate in small groups of between 12 and 14 men rather than in large bodies of men.

Letter from DT Winslow, Mohill, [County Leitrim], to unidentified recipient, reporting on the destruction of property belonging to Michael Flynn, herdsman of Mr Fitzpatrick of Killeshandra. Letter from John Morgan, Chief Constable, Corrofin District [Corofin, County Clare], to Maj Warburton, reporting on a system of intimidation against Rev Davoren and his employees on account of a presentment which he was awarded and also intimidation against Mr Synge’s people; noting that Col Osborne has been of assistance but adding that the district needs a resident magistrate. Also covering letters from George Warburton, Inspector General, Cove [Cobh, County Cork], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that Mr Synge is persevering in keeping up schools where the scriptures are read despite being advised to give up his plan for the present.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Affidavit of Patt Clifferty of Drumdoney, Kinawly, County Fermanagh, providing details of the Ribbonman oath which he claims he was forced to swear by Peter Clifferty and Connor Gillen; noting that he swore to do all in his power to destroy protestants, not testify against ‘a Brother’ and give preference to ‘a Brother’ in the market place, to assist in the taking of Enniskillen in the event of an uprising and adding that they ‘All look to Mr [Daniel] O’Connell for the word’ which will be given if they do not get their right in the next session of parliament. Also covering letter from Charles Fausset, magistrate, Lisbofin, County Fermanagh, to Capt Warburton, Swanlinbar, [County Cavan], noting that the informant gave the information on the condition that he would not be called upon to testify in any court. Also covering letters from Bartholomew Warburton, Swanlinbar, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting that Mr Joyce, Chief Constable, Arney, County Fermanagh was provided with similar information from an individual who had not yet been sworn into the Ribbon System, stating that since the ‘Battle of Macken’ [Macken, County Fermanagh] smiths have been busy making hundreds of pikes in order to attack orangemen and protestants in Enniskillen; describing a pike which was shown to him and noting that he has received similar reports from Mr Armstrong, a Fermanagh magistrate.

Letter from Bartholomew Warburton, Swanlinbar, [County Cavan], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting on his attempts at Enniskillen post office, [County Fermanagh] to intercept post delivered to a man named Browning; noting that when Browning was searched a number of inflammatory songs and poems in printed and manuscript form were found in his possession and assuming that his home was used as meeting house for disaffected persons. Includes legal opinion of Richard W Greene, stating that no charges can be brought in this case.
