Copy of letter from Tomkins Brew, Chief Constable, Oranmore, [County Galway], to Maj Warburton, reporting that a ‘scene of Hurling, Foot racing’ took place at Athenry, despite Rev Eyre protestation on the matter to the Chief Secretary; adding that after the hurling match a large mob playing drums and music marched up to Eyre’s house; suggesting that magistrates, such as Mr Lopdell, be required to put a stop to these Sunday meetings, as they could become ‘party meetings’. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Castlegar, [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that he has written to the magistrates and noting that it is now very easy to ‘direct popular dislike’.

Letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Roscommon, [County Roscommon], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting on his investigation into the attempted murder of Mr Day; noting that an arrested suspect has stated that the attack was instigated and ordered by a priest but adding that he is ‘incredulous as to that fact’; stating that he has received every assistance from Arthur Brown and adding that the investigation must be handled delicately as there are two catholic magistrates in the area who must be informed of developments; concluding that a spirit of disaffection is spreading and drawing attention to his lack of manpower.

Copied extracts from reports from chief constables Molony and Capt Ireland in counties Galway, Clare and Roscommon reporting on outrages in their counties including the theft of a gun from Michael Carney of Kiltacka, Rockvale, County Clare; an attack on the elderly Widow Hurley of Rockforest; a threatening Rockite notice served on Rev Grace of Kilkeedy Glebe;, the burning of a lodge belonging to Peter Comyns; the attempted shooting of Mr Walker, sub constable of Ballinafad station. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Archdeacon John Whitty, magistrate and protestant clergyman, Kilmainham Glebe, Ennistymon, [County Clare], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, forwarding copies of threatening Rockite notices [extant] served on him and lamenting that his house has been attacked twelve times since October; observing that his neighbour Mr Davoren has succumbed to the intimidation and has left following the murder of Pilkington; complaining about the widespread proliferation of illegal firearms, lack of a stipendiary magistrate and the withdrawal of the military from the area. Includes threatening notices signed Captain Rock warning Whitty to leave the county or ‘not wan of ye will walk a step by Easter’.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Castlegar, [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, reporting that Mr Morgan, Chief Constable was successful in capturing Flynn, who is suspected of murdering Rev Davoren’s man, but noting that Flynn was allowed to escape by a constable and sub constable who had charge of him; adding that the constable has been dismissed and seeking legal advice if charges can be brought against the sub constable; fearing that both men may have acted in this manner because they had been sworn into ‘the system’. Includes legal opinion of Richard W Greene, noting that the facts of the case amount to a felony.

Copied extracts from reports from chief constables and sub inspectors Caldwell, Townsend, Tabuteau, Molony, Capt Ireland, Fitzhenry and Curtis in counties Clare, Galway, Roscommon and Sligo reporting on outrages in their counties including attacks on houses near Miltown Malbay and Currofin by gangs searching for arms; an planned ambush on the constabulary of Ennistymon; intimidation of tenants at Kildysart; a threatening notice received by Rev Lahiff, curate priest of Kilkeedy, warning him to cease associating with Brunswickers and interfering in protestant affairs; threatening notices from Terry Alts and Rockites; an attack on Mount Dillon gate house in County Roscommon. Also copy of ‘Rockite Resolutions’ from Ennistymon including an oath to assist ‘French or Spaniards or any other Catholic Power endeavouring to free us from George the Fourth’ and undertaking not to have ‘carnal communication with a brothers wife sister or daughter’. Also letter from Edward O’Brien, Dromoland, [County Clare], to Maj Warburton, requesting that additional constables be stationed in Ennistymon and Corofin, [County Clare] to counteract the nightly raids on respectable farmers and tenants in the area; also recommending that Mr Brew be sent into the area as a magistrate as he knows the people well and would receive information. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Castlegar, [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that he has sent Brew to the Burren District and recommending that a military detachment remain in Tulla; observing that the watchword ‘Be True’ is revived in Clare. Includes annotations from Gower concerning the granting of bail to suspects.
