Letter from [Robert] Otway Cave [MP for Leicester and later for County Tipperary], Castle Otway, Nenagh, [County Tipperary], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, relating to the surrender of ‘the notorious outlaw and murderer’ Kirby. States Kirby has offered to provide information ‘as shall greatly tend to the tranquilization of this part of the country’, in return for the commutation of his sentence from death to transportation. Annotation on reverse by William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating ‘how Mr Cave could make such a proposition for an outlaw, I know not, except his being a candidate for the County of Tipperary’.
