File of correspondence between Maj William Miller [Inspector General], Fermoy, [County Cork], Sir Francis Leveson Gower, [Chief Secretary], Dublin Castle (including damp press copies), William Chaytor, mayor of Clonmel, County Tipperary, and George Greene, counsellor, Powerstown, Clonmel, regarding a riot at the custom gap in Clonmel on 6 January, a market day. The government question Chaytor’s decision to quell a riot which broke out because of a legally disputed toll by using police and military; local inhabitant Greene points to illegality of the corporation’s toll; Chaytor justifies his actions and complains of local agitators counsellor Ronayne of Dungarvan and Counsillor Greene, asking about the legality of an upcoming meeting on the question of tolls. Also includes annotations by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin], saying police should not have been employed in this way, and saying the meeting ought not to be prevented. |
