File of correspondence regarding a decision by the County Offaly Grand Jury to remove their assizes from Philipstown [Daingean, County Offaly] to Tullamore, [County Offaly], with opposition from a local landholder. Including correspondence from Lord Tullamore [Charles Bury, 2nd Earl of Charleville], Dublin and London, to [Sir Francis Leveson Gower and Sir Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge, successive Chief Secretaries, Dublin Castle], forwarding a memorial by himself and seven other gentlemen commissioned to do so by the Grand Jury, to Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke Northumberland, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, petitioning in favour, and letter by Tullamore to Sir Charles [William] Flint, Resident Secretary, Irish Office, London, discussing the financial implications. Also including correspondence between Lord Ponsonby [John Ponsonby, Baron Ponsonby], Paris, his secretary Robert Miller, Dublin, another associate, Laurence Walker, [London, England], and Gower, Ponsonby arguing against the decision. Moreover, including annotation by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin], stating that the new court house at Tullamore needs to be warranted by act of parliament or by the judges [King’s Bench] (15 Sep 1830). One letter by Tullamore to Hardinge seems unrelated, regarding accommodation for the female prison.
