Two letters from Maj Samson Carter, [magistrate], Kingscourt, [County Cavan], to Sir Henry Hardinge, [1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], enclosing a letter from John Irwin, Chief Constable, Carrickmacross, [County Monaghan], to Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General [for Ulster], Holly Hill, Strabane, [County Tyrone], reporting on the arrest of Edward Duffy, charged with an assault on William Barington [and for attacking ‘O’Brien’, a gunsmith]; also mentioning Constable Robert Hunter and sub-constable Walter Cole. Carter further encloses an affidavit of Hunter taken by James Evatt, magistrate, County Monaghan.

Letter from William Channer, Chief Constable, Ballinasloe, [County Galway], to Sir Henry Hardinge, [1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], reporting on a dispute between Patrick Devan, [Kilalteron, County Galway] and a certain Gallaveen, the latter sentenced to a fine by magistrates John Almond and John Eyre, mentioning Constable Evans; also, on a Rockite party searching the houses of a certain Howe and of the Costelloes for arms near Clonfert [County Galway].

Letters from Arthur Crossley, magistrate, and J Brown, Chief Constable, both Drumalga Cottage, Athlone, [County Roscommon], to Sir Henry Hardinge, [1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], enclosing a letter from Edmund Kelly, Kiltoom, [County Roscommon], complaining of a large party cutting oats in his possession, having reported to Sergt Willis. Crossley arranges to match a reward of Stg£50 offered by Kelly from government funds.

Memorial and petition Patrick and Edmond Collins, Town Gaol, Galway, [County Galway], to Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke Northumberland, [Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Dublin], stating that they were imprisoned for wounding a man named Magrath in self-defence during an attack on their house which was made because they had been electioneering for Valentine Blake Esq, enclosing a certificate by Robert Blyng, surgeon, Galway, stating that Magrath is now out of danger. Also, letters by Blake, Menlough [Menlo] Castle, Galway, confirming the case made; also, confirmations by [Rev] Kerry Morgan, Vicar, St Nicholas, Galway, to [Archdeacon] Thomas Singleton, [private secretary to Hugh Percy, 3rd duke Northumberland, Dublin], and a receipt by Dominick Doyle, 56 Blessington [], Galway, for three affidavits [used in the Collins’s defence] from Dublin Castle, sworn by Patrick, Martin Collins and Stephen Nee.

Further, reporting on the theft of hay from Mr Thomas Alcock, near Elphin, and asking for permission to offer rewards; also, brief reference to Mr Kelly’s case, and Kelly’s complaint about Mr Bond’s indifference as a magistrate. Further, annotation by Hardinge with directions.

Letter from Charles Staunton Cahill, Ennis, [County Clare], to Sir Henry Hardinge, [1st Viscount Hardinge, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], complaining that [William] Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle] deprived him of his commission of the peace because he never liked Catholic magistrates; claiming he has a list of people disturbing the area of Corofin, [County Clare] and asking to transmit an order to Mr John Morgan, Chief Constable, Corofin, to arrest them. Also, annotation by Hardinge telling Cahill to inform the local authorities. Further, similar note by [Archdeacon Thomas Singleton, [private secretary to Hugh Percy, 3rd duke Northumberland, Dublin].

Also enclosing letter from Robert Thompson, Chief Constable, Borrisokane, [County Tipperary] on an outrage against Thomas Waller Esq, Finnoe [County Tipperary], and a Rockite notice sent to Robert Dudley, a crown witness. Further, annotation by Hardinge mentioning the possibility of using moveable columns of military.
