Letter from William Gore, Thomas B FitzGerald, and Edward Glascock, Commissioners of Stamps, Stamp Office, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, indicating that a weekly list of imports and exports is published in Belfast by Taggart’s Mercantile Journal. Also includes letter from the Commissioners of Stamps to Sir Edward B Baker, Dublin Castle, regarding petition by Joseph Folingsby, Comptroller of Customs, Belfast, County Antrim, to publish a list of imports and exports free from stamp duty; they express view that since Taggart has been producing these figures for eleven years ‘the publication of a Second List, free from duty, might prove injurious to the Stamp Revenue’. Includes petition from merchants of Belfast, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting that Folingsby be permitted to publish the list, ‘a most desirable and useful publication for the Commercial interests of this Town’, supported by names of 75 individuals, representing various business concerns.

Commissioners of Stamps, Dublin: case of John N Russell, Limerick, tried on charge of fraud against the Stamp Law

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from William Gore, John Trench and Edward Glascock, Commissioners of Stamps, Stamp Office, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting on case of John N Russell, Limerick, County Limerick, who was called to appear in the Court of Exchequer on charge of fraud against the Stamp Law. Conveys that charges raised before local magistrates by Alderman Wilkinson and Mr Calcott, were found to be outside jurisdiction, but that proceedings will continue in the Court of Exchequer ‘for the recovery of the penalty incurred’. Also includes copy petition from Russell to Commissioners of Stamp Duty in Ireland, requesting that proceedings against him are stopped on grounds of cost and that he had made a previous appearance in court, the charges against him being dismissed. Letter from JW Russell, Limerick, County Limerick, to Gregory, requesting alleviation from proceedings and related legal costs, on behalf of his father who has ‘been confined for some days with a fever’.
