SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Thomas Cosby, Stradbally Hall, [Stradbally, County Laois], to [William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], referring to the recruitment of a new governor for the Maryborough Gaol [Portlaoise, County Laois], and originally enclosing guidelines for one of the applicants Mr Algeo, Richmond Penitentiary [Dublin], pointing out that his competitors for the post include Mr Crawford, also Richmond Penitentiary, Mr Wilson, Deputy Governor of the Richmond Asylum [Dublin]. Favourable comments on the recent assizes and the juries’ fearless conduct, and the way the lower orders in places infested with the ‘Ribbon system’ have been more tranquil since. Adding that the body of [George] Conrahy, interred in the prison yard, was eventually given to his father for a private funeral, as agreed by Cosby with [fellow magistrate] Maj O’Donoghue. Two letters from Arthur Crossley, magistrate, Elphin, [County Roscommon], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], recommending to pay compensation to [Thomas] Corkoran, Ashbrook, [County Roscommon], caretaker to Mrs O’Farrell of Bloomfield [County Roscommon] who fought off an armed party attacking his house; and stating that he arrested four persons for the crime, including Patrick Mullvihill and Patrick Garretty. Further, reporting on the burning of sheds belonging to Andrew Gillhuly, Shanballymore, [County Roscommon], agent to Charles O’Neil [O’Neill] and Francis [Feathertone]. [See also CSO/RP/OR/1830/90.]

Letter from [William] Kemmis, [crown solicitor], Kildare Street, [Dublin], to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], enclosing letter from Richard Griffith, [engineer and Commissioner of Valuation], Dublin, referring to a capital offence committed by his clerk Michael Curtain in Toureen Bryan [Toureen], County Tipperary, stating that some local men went bail, asking not to estreat bail now that Curtain has disappeared so as not to risk local turbulence. Kemmis also encloses affidavits from Bryan McDonnell, Alexander McDonnell, Edward Herbert, Alick McDonnelland Thomas McDonnell, also mentioning John Kennedy, Patrick Leddin, John Sullivan, Dr Silcocks, Mr Boyd, Ned Herbert. The likely cause for the murder was a dispute over land.
