SCOPE & CONTENT:

First 2 pages of a memorandum providing eye-witness account of a ‘Separate Meeting of Catholics’, held at the Corn Exchange, Dublin, chaired by Thomas Cloney Esq, with verbatim transcription of speech by [Daniel] O’Connell concerning letter received from John Markham Marshall. O’Connell stated that at a previous meeting, he had criticised Marshall’s evidence before a Parliamentary Committee in relation to the ‘murderous system of depopulation’ in Ireland. Referring to his friendship with Marshall’s father [Ralph Marshall], he stated ‘I wish distinctly to retract anything harsh I may have said of him’. [Remainder of item not present].

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Memorandum providing eye-witness account of a ‘Separate meeting of Catholics’, held at The Great Room, the Corn Exchange, Dublin, chaired by Dominick Ronayne, with verbatim transcription of speeches. Requisition dated 12 November 1827 read by Secretary Mr Behan calling the meeting for the purpose of devising a petition for the repeal of the Subletting Act, commonly referred to as the ‘Goulburn Act’, as well as any other pieces of legalisation opposed to ‘total unqualified and unconditional Emancipation’. Requisition contained 17 signatories: Daniel O’Connell; Richard Sheil; Dominick Ronayne; Michael Hughes; Chris[topher] Fitzsimon; Maurice O’Connell; James Sugrue; John Redmond; John Reynolds; William Molton; JA Curran; John Browne; Michael Staunton; A Carew O’Dwyer; Eustace Kelly; Nicholas Comyn; and FW Conway. Proceedings interrupted with a report of the death of [Daniel] O’Connell’s ‘favourite’ nephew. Meeting adjourned until the following Wednesday.

First 2 pages of a memorandum providing eye-witness account of a meeting of the ‘New Catholic Association’, held at the Corn Exchange, Dublin, chaired by [James] O’Gorman Mahon, with verbatim transcription of speech by [Daniel] O’Connell, concerning a petition for relief by Mr Neale, a fifty pound freeholder in County Waterford, who explained that as a consequence of casting his vote in the recent Election, a distress of £250 was placed on his land. He produced a replevin in support of his claim that he did not owe the money, but this document was later found to be forged and Neale’s request for relief was rejected. He argued that while the association had always strove towards this aim, he felt that ‘there never was a period in the history of Catholic politics in which the Catholic Body were more unanimous than at the present moment’. First 2 pages of a memorandum providing eye-witness account of a ‘Adjourned Separate Meeting of Catholics’, held at the Corn Exchange, Dublin, chaired by Mr Langan, with verbatim transcription of speech by [Daniel] O’Connell, concerning a letter received from the O’Conor Don [Owen O’Conor] enclosing a number of subscriptions to the catholic rent. Letter referred to Treasurer Rev [Francis J] L’Estrange. O’Connell commented that some members were not exerting themselves in a similar fashion in the collection of the catholic rent, and observed further that some had yet to subscribe to the rent themselves. First 2 pages of a memorandum providing eye-witness account of a meeting of the ‘New Catholic Association’, held at the Corn Exchange, Dublin, chaired by Richard Dillon Esq, with verbatim transcription of speeches concerning the creation of a wax model of Daniel O’Connell by TS Jordan of Nassau Street, Dublin, presented to the association for placement in their meeting room ‘as an humble testimony of respect for the talent and ability of so valuable a Member of Society’. Dillon commented that as chair, he had the honour of receiving the model into his hands, while ‘at the same time hav[ing] the original before me who has stood forward so nobly for the benefit of his Country…’ [remainder of item not present].

First 2 pages of a memorandum providing eye-witness account of a ‘Adjourned Separate Meeting of Catholics’, held at the Corn Exchange, Dublin, chaired by Stephen Coppinger, with verbatim transcription of speech by [Daniel] O’Connell concerning a request by Lord Killeen [Arthur James Plunkett, 9th earl of Fingall] to postpone a 14 day meeting, due to commence 1 January [1828], ‘to as late a period as possible’. While he wished to comply with Killeen’s request, O’Connell argued that it was important that they had prepared a number of petitions relating to the repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts in support of the dissenters, as well as ‘total and unqualified Emancipation’, in time for the first sitting of parliament on 22 January.
