File of documents concerning the investigation of Michael Ward, sub-constable, Castledermot, County Kildare constabulary, for an alleged assault against a man named Rourke. Includes letter from Col Sir John Harvey, [inspector general of police for province of Leinster], Kilkenny, [County Kilkenny], to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, declaring for his misbehaviour Ward be deducted £1 from his wages; additional letter from Harvey to Stanley encloses copy of report of Ballickmoyler petty session [Queen's County; County Laois] from Capt J Dyas, sub-inspector for County Kildare, Naas. Also copy letter from Harvey to the magistrates of Ballickmoyler petty session stressing Ward’s previous good conduct and length of service and enclosing a certificate of recommendation signed by four magistrates. Also includes letter from the magistrates to Harvey asserting their contention that Ward is unfit to hold the position of sub-constable and a fine of £1 is wholly inadequate; also includes letter from John Clennan, late sub-constable, Dublin, to [Hovenden] Stapleton, magistrate, indicating he was dismissed from the police for drunkenness and seeking reinstatement.
