Letter from John Evans, ensign, 1st Garrison Battalion, Castle Fleming, Rathdowney, Queen’s County [County Laois], to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, complaining of the hardship involved in being elected against his will as church warden for parish of Rathdowney; noting that not only is he unable to collect the cess but the Board of First Fruits are threating law proceedings against him for failure to meet the yearly instalment; requesting to learn if as a military person he can be compelled to accept the office of church warden. Encloses demand from the commissioners of First Fruits for payment, which fell due on 1 July last. Also copy and draft reply from Dublin Castle to Evans, indicating his rank or military position does not exempt him from holding the position. |
