Includes letter from Gahan, Rock Castle, [Castlerock], Coleraine, to the first clerk of the military department, Dublin Castle, stating that an instance of disobedience has occurred on the part of Sgt Rawson of the Raphoe Yeomanry Corps [County Donegal]; explaining that officer failed to forward district pay returns and likewise did not make a timely advance of his Field Report; stressing the inconvenience to the public service caused by such conduct and remarking that Rawson is ‘unfit’ to hold his post. Also includes petition of William Dutchfield, permanent drummer, 2nd Company of the Londonderry Legion of Yeomanry, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, requesting issue of his regular pay from 26th of October 1830; outlining the circumstances of his claim and stressing he has given ‘full satisfaction to all his superiors in the execution of his Duty’. Includes letter from Mahony, Killarney, [County Kerry], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, alluding to a report of the ‘extremely irregular’ conduct of Sgt Donovan of the Coshbride Yeomanry Corps and a subsequent order for his removal; expressing his sympathy for the ‘truly unfortunate old man’ and proposing some degree of compassion. Also includes anonymous petition from ‘A friend to tho not a member of the yeomanry Establishment’, Bandon, [County Cork], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, declaring that ‘two great evils’ are working to the detriment of the yeomanry of the town of Bandon; explaining that body are a ‘party’ or sectarian outfit and, second, that two men of doubtful age are nominated to act as permanent sergeants; advising that enquiry be made as to their ages and emphasising the need for the force to be composed of ‘young and active men’. Includes certificate of competence for Edward Blakely stating he is ‘perfect in the different beats of the drum’ and fit to act in the capacity of drummer with the Yeomanry Corps of Newtownards, [County Down]; signed by Lieut Colonel J Powell, 30th Regiment [of Foot], Belfast Barracks. Also petition of Sgt John Rice, Belfast Loyals Corps, to Lord Donegall [George Augustus Chichester, 2nd Marquess of Donegall, Governor of County Antrim], offering his resignation from the post of permanent sergeant to the yeomanry; noting he is now 61 years of age and has served with the force for a period of about 27 years; adding at present he is ‘most severely afflicted by disease’. File of documents accumulated by Brig Maj John Semple, inspector of yeomanry for counties Cavan, Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon, primarily in connection with the recruitment or replacement of permanent sergeants to the yeomanry corps in his region; also includes details on the recruitment of drummers and buglers, resignations, and training in the new system of drill. Includes memorial of Sgt Patrick Hopkins, Kilcrow, near Lanesboro [Lanesborough], County Cavan, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, seeking advance of a measure of pecuniary assistance; stating he has accumulated more than 33 years in military service: first with the Royal Irish Artillery, second with the Longford Militia and latterly with the Lanesborough Yeomanry Corps. Also includes memorial of the sergeants of Ballyjamesduff Yeomanry Corps, County Cavan, to Paget, complaining they have ‘neither swords or belts’ and requesting they be supplied with same; indicating that their firearms are sent to the ordnance stores and at present their only weapons are pikes or spears; signed by ten officers.
