File of documents concerning request by Thomas Whitley, inspector of fisheries for the county of Limerick and Clare, Limerick, for an investigation following his incarceration in jail for 11 days at the behest of the police of Limerick |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
File of documents concerning request by Thomas Whitley, inspector of fisheries for the county of Limerick and Clare, Limerick, for an investigation following his incarceration in jail for 11 days at the behest of the police of Limerick. Includes letter from George W Drought, Chief Magistrate of Police, Limerick, to the Chief Secretary’s Office, pointing out that Whitley has been antagonising the owners of small fishing weirs on the River Shannon and that he had spoken to him about the same, 3 March 1829. Also copy of small printed handbill seeking 1000 men for the protection of the Shannon fisheries, 7 May 1929. Also letter from Mr Hunt, magistrate of Limerick, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, complaining of the actions of Whitley, whom he accuses of going out on the Shannon ‘with a party of armed men’ to confront those along the banks engaged in keeping weirs; warns of potential ‘loss of life’ if Whitley’s actions are not curtailed, 12 May 1829. Includes petition from Whitley to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining of the behaviour of the chief magistrates of police in Limerick. Explaining that despite application he was given no protection in performance of duty by the constabulary: on 29 April 1829, whilst returning from duty on the River Shannon, he complains he, ‘was waylaid by upwards of five hundred men in Arms’ who followed him ‘for six miles firing Ball Cartridge’; argues that rather than having the co-operation of the police, he found a warrant enforcedagainst him by George W Drought, Chief Magistrate of Police, committing him to Limerick County Gaol for 11 days, c26 February 1831. |
