Letter from Bartholomew Warburton, magistrate, Cavan, to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, drawing attention to a planned public meeting near Cootehill likely to breach the peace; in the circumstances, he stresses the need for a stronger military force than is present in the district and requests advice; adding as yet he not received the commission of the peace for Monaghan. Encloses affidavit of Michael [Swany], servant, stating he got information in McCabe’s Inn of a planned public meeting to be held near Cootehill, County Cavan, to discuss such matters as payment of rent and tithe; 20000 persons were expected, a number too ‘strong for the military who should not defeat them’; it was to be a combination of the lower orders of both Protestants and Roman Catholics who would together seek justice. |
