Letter from Maj William Miller, [Inspector General of Police in Munster], Fermoy, [County Cork], to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, calling attention to a local crisis in certain towns of County Limerick over the value and utility of paper money. Enclosing letter from [William Smith], Sub-inspector, Rathkeale, to Miller, reporting on an outbreak of uncertainty as to the value of bank notes in his locality, a matter that saw some workmen discharged from their employment; the matter was resolved, however, by the release of handbills signed by various local gentlemen indicating their willingness to ‘take the Notes of both Banks’ as valid and acceptable payment. Also note expressing the approval of Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, at the ‘spirit[ed] and judicious proceedings of the Gentry of Limerick’.
