Complains of having been bedridden for a period of 5 weeks and laments he is ‘scarcely able to walk across the room’. Explains his application is made on the basis of his father’s military service and of his own contributed to an investigation of the rights of the craner and wharfinger in the Port of Dublin, which ultimately increased government income through rent by £6,000 per year.

Letter from Mathew Barrington, crown solicitor, Dublin, concerning the protection of a young male who witnessed a murder in Dingle, County Kerry

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Mathew Barrington, crown solicitor [Munster circuit], Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting in favour of issuing financial support to a boy who is the principle witness to a murder in the vicinity of Dingle, County Kerry. He points out ‘the Boy was the only person present when the Murder was Committed’ and as such is an essential material witness. Returns letter from John Hickson, Dingle, to Goulburn, drawing attention to the importance of defending young John Crean who was present at ‘a most shocking case of murder’ in the locality. He observes that Crean is in the custody of Mr Cruise, local chief constable of police, and that application was made to the proprietor of Kerry County Gaol to ascertain if the boy could be accommodated there until the trial, but without success.

Petition of Mary Wallace, spinster, County Cork, alleging she is denied justice following a rape and seeking an investigation

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Mary Wallace, spinster, Carrig, Mallow, County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, alleging she is denied justice following a rape committed against her and seeking a further investigation of the matter. States on the morning of 4th of November she was assaulted and raped by a man named ‘Collins’ at a location near the town of Mallow. Conveys she give information on the crime to local magistrate, Major Croker, who subsequently issued a warrant for his arrest of the perpetrator and he was confined to the jail of Mallow. Complains the investigation that followed was partial and unsatisfactory, since witnesses in support of her claim were not called upon to testify. She asks that an order for a second investigation be direction to Michael Callaghan, painter and glazier, Mallow, for conveyance to the magistrates.

As a basis for the application, he states, he personally has performed the duties of postmaster of Ennistymon for a period of near 21 years, at the modest salary of £27 10s per year. Adds on base a poem dedicated to Wellesley. Petition of William Earles, former revenue tide waiter, Ennis, County Clare, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting an augmentation of his annual pension to supply the wants of life. Refers to the difficulties arising from his incapacity and recalls the verdict of the principle surgeons of Mercer’s Hospital, Dublin, who declared that a necessary amputation would endanger his life. Expresses regret that an application to the commissioners of excise, Dublin, did not bring a positive result and laments his current pension of just £10 per annum is insufficient to live on. Recounts he held his post in revenue for a number of years in the Strangford district of County Down; also indicates he owes his past employment to the influence of Francis Savage, MP for County Down [1794-1812]. Requests settlement of the amount of his expenses of £10 16s 9d which covers the cost of having the matter tried at the assizes of Castlebar, County Mayo.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Jemina Mackay, widow, 67 Blessington Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of a pension or measure of financial aid in recognition of her husband’s long service in the army. Indicates her husband, Captain George Mackay, late of the 48th regiment of foot, spent over 7 years in New South Wales, Australia, and later died there. He was captain of three regiments in that place and has more than 21 years experience in military service. States his father served as major at Tilbury Fort, London, for a period of 30 years; she also makes reference to the service given the crown by other family members. Acknowledges her late husband left the sale of his commission to her, but having debts to meet, she fears not having sufficient resources for her future welfare. Also draft reply from the CSO stating that no funds are available out of which relief can be given. Conveys an earlier letter from Mackay has been sent for the consideration of the Duke of York and Albany [Frederick Augustus] but as yet a reply is not received.

Petition of Augusta Frederica Fitzsimons, widow, 11 York Street, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of a pension in recognition of her husband’s and father’s contribution to the crown. Claims her husband, Edward John Fitzsimons, at the time of their marriage received over £300 per year as inspector of taxes for Ireland, but was later reduced to an income of £100 per year. In addition, she observes, he spent ‘many years’ assisting his father with the ‘[Dublin] Hibernian Journal’ newspaper, a publication with known allegiances to government. She further asserts she is daughter to John Halahan, whom she describes as ‘the founder’ as well as professor of the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin.

Letter from George R Reynolds, Magilligan, near Coleraine, County Londonderry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a situation of employment under government anywhere in the United Kingdom. Alludes to present financial difficulties arising from ownership of a freehold in Coleraine, passed to his wife through her brother. States when the property came into his possession, it was heavily encumbered with legacy debts to cousins, and he was forced to make settlement of claims. Complains that outstanding debts remain on the property, plus interest on same, and he faces the prospect of being sent to prison if found to default. Also nota bene recorded on a paper slip by Reynolds indicating he would accept of a post of clerk to a police magistrate in any province of Ireland.
