Includes letter from William H Carter, Castlemartin, County Kildare, to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, referring to a representation from a priest and three merchants of the town of Belmullet, County Mayo, asking that protection be given their shipping trade against attacks by the banditti; also requesting that a stipendiary magistrate be appointed to that place. Also includes letter from Maj Samson Carter, [police magistrate], Castlebar, County Mayo, to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, stating that he has arrived to attend the investigation of the killing of ‘Ginnelly’, over which he will make a report in due course. Also includes report by Lieut Nugent, RN, Belmullet, on the state of the country in the barony of Erris; remarking that nightly meetings are held and observing that such is due to a shortage of foodstuff in the region; relaying the determination of the country people to prevent the shipping of oats, unless a quantity of potatoes are brought in. |
