File of letters concerning reported allegations that Mr Barron Stafford has been attempting to organise a conspiracy to resist payment of tithes in the parish of Stradbally and neighbouring Kilmacthomas in County Waterford. Includes copy of letter from D Mahony, Chief Constable, Dungarvan, [County Waterford], to Lorenzo Power, noting that he has submitted the report of Mr Bateman, constable, to the magistrates and requesting a meeting. Also letter from Power, Carrick [on Suir], to Mahony, stating that he never heard Barron Stafford say that he had organized the people not to pay tithes. Also letter from Mahony, to Samuel Croker, Sub-Inspector, stating that he has been unable to legally prove the conspiracy; mentioning Lorenzo Power of Stradbally and his namesake who is a magistrate and also Daniel Wall, lay impropriator of Stradbally; suspecting that Power ‘does not tell the whole truth’. Also covering letter from Croker, Carrick on Suir, to Maj W Miller, adding that he has also heard of the conspiracy and suggesting that Power, the magistrate, be examined under oath. Letter from [Rev] Luke Fowler, Wellbrook, Freshford, [County Kilkenny], to unidentified recipient, seeking assistance in the recovery of over £2400 in tithes in Rathcoole parish; noting that he has secured subpoenas against individuals in Court of Exchequer but cannot get anyone to enforce them due to the threat of violence; seeking constabulary or military assistance adding that Mr Greene, resident magistrate has stated that he will be guided by government; observing that the farmers are selling their produce and are paying all their rent and bill except for tithes. Includes legal opinion of Richard W Greene, noting that under the current regulations the constabulary can only assist the process server where violence is inflicted on him and observing that the matter is one of public policy.
