Letters from [Laurence] Sulivan, [Deputy Secretary at War], War Office, [Whitehall, London, England], to Lieut Col [Sir William] Gosset, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle], regarding the necessity to employ Roman Catholic clergymen at the major Military Hospitals including Cork and Cove [Cobh, both County Cork]; as also letter from Cap [MI] Johnstone, Castlebar, [County Mayo], to Lieut Col Hare, Castlebar, stating that the Roman Catholic parish priest enjoined soldiers not to leave before high mass was over, without cause. Further, letters from [Lieut Gen Richard Hussey Vivian, 1st Baron Vivian], Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin, enclosing a report from Dr J Pitcairn, Deputy Inspector of Hospitals, Cork, and enclosing a return of duties performed and remuneration received by Protestant and Catholic clergy attending the Irish troops in the four Provinces, not naming members of the clergy, and showing that no Catholic priests receive remuneration. Also includes note by [Littleton] finding 'it desirable to get some control over the Catholic Priests by paying them' and opinions expressed by Vivian and Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess Anglesey, [Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Dublin], recommending that the Roman Catholic priests tending to all the great barracks in Ireland ought to be paid.
