| SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Major George Warburton, Limerick, County Limerick, chief police magistrate for County Clare, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on the outcome of his visit to Robert Leslie of Tarbert, County Kerry, to communicate with local magistrates concerning the 'alarming' state of disturbance in County Kerry. States that the peasantry in Leslie's neighbourhood are all sworn [into the Ribbon system], and emphasises the fear amongst 'respectable people', noting that the doors and windows of Leslie's house are barred. Warburton also refers to the additional dangers resultant from possible food scarcity, owing to the severity of the weather. Praises conduct of the Tarbert yeomanry corps, and requests that additional arms be provided for its men, 7 October 1821. Encloses memorandum by Warburton, marked 'very Private', concerning possible proclamation of 2 disturbed baronies in County Kerry, and suggesting that they could be placed under Warburton's superintendence. Reiterates the likelihood of food scarcity, and severe weather, in increasing unrest. |
