Letter from Rev Latham Coddington, vicar ofKillelan, Timolin Glebe, Ballytore [Ballitore, County Kildare], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, complaining of a growing spirit of resistance to tithe collection in his parish and seeking the advice of government; stating he has held his parish for near 20 years and received his income under the tithe composition act without particular difficulty, but recently combinations have been formed, threatening notices posted on the chapel door and anyone willing to purchase distrained goods is subject to intimidation; adding his agent is ready to act if protected but asking ‘what can three men do against hundreds?’

Letter from Rev Latham Coddington, Tinahely Glebe, [County Wicklow], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, reflecting on the collection of tithes in his parish; observing that he has exercised discretion towards his parishioners but is conscious of the belligerent influence of Father Lawler of Baltinglass. Enclosing an affidavit from John Cambell, butcher, Baltinglass, stating that he accompanied the tithe agent in distraining sheep for tithe arrears, upon which the owners became irate and sought instructions from the local priest; conveying the priest pronounced a curse from the pulpit upon any man that would pay Coddington his dues; sworn before four magistrates.
