Petition of Michael Feeghan [Feehan], Queen's County [Laois], detailing persecution of his family by followers of 'Captain Carder'

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Michael Feeghan [Feehan], to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle. States that he rents 10 acres of land from Mrs Stepney of Durrow, Queen's County [County Laois], but has 'become obnoxious to his disaffected Neighbours', because of his 'Industry, improvement of his Ground and the punctual Discharge of his Rent'. Describes the several attacks on his home and property since 1819; also attacks on his sons. States that, 'his Life has been rendered insupportable by various species of Persecution. Requests that his 3 sons be employed in the police establishment, to remove them from danger and poverty [1821]. Encloses threatening letter from 'Captin [Captain] Carder', stating that Feaghan 'must Quit the parish of Durrow….you Blody [sic] informing theif [sic]…or if not the most morose Deth [sic] you must Get. And After Deth your remains must be Consumed into ashes. Both you and your Famely [sic]' [1821].
