SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from George Ness, William Street, Dublin, merchant, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 10 November 1821, enclosing anonymous threatening letter sent to Ness, condemning Ness for his actions at a recent meeting of the Dublin Corporation, in attempting to bring a motion, 'to make Bloody vagabond cutthroat [sic] papists freemen of that corporation'. Warns Ness that, '…if I hear another word out of your head about Papists to be made freemen of any our corporations I will have you dragged from limb to limb and your head hung on the rapper of your halldoor..'. Letter signed 'a fellow that w[oul]d shoot a papist, as soon sir as you w[oul]d a mad dog', 9 November 1821. Ness informs Grant that he has not reported the matter to the magistrates of Dublin, who, 'I am sorry to say appear to me to favour the party from which the letter seems to come'. |
