SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend John Chester, Mallow, County Cork, Church of Ireland rector of Ballyclough, Mallow, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, emphasising the 'rapid advance' of disaffection in the country and the extent of the nightly raids for firearms and ammunition. States that he and his proctor have been threatened, and that the disaffected, 'also avowed their determination to cut off, and nail to the Church Door, the Ears of Mr Cotter -the respectable Clergyman of Castlemagner Parish [Mallow, County Cork] for presuming to tear down the enclosed notice', 7 November 1821. Encloses the notice referred to in his letter, entitled 'A General Notice', and signed 'Captain Rock', warning of the consequences for those who try to demand tithe and rent payments [November 1821].
