SCOPE & CONTENT:

9 letters from John Ball, Leicester Square, London, to Charles Grant, Irish Office, London, and Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin, concerning Ball's repeated requests for an interview with Grant, before Grant returns to Dublin. Ball urges that he wishes to discuss a matter of importance to government, relating to his claims of harsh treatment in the service of government. Includes letter from Ball to Grant, enclosing Ball's statement on the wrongs he endured whilst in the service of the revenue department, and specifically in his work in detecting and preventing fraud and embezzlement in the office of the prothonotaries in the Irish court of common pleas. States that his work for the crown in detecting fraud amongst Irish officials, has resulted in his being branded 'an Informer, a spy, an Agent of Government', and unemployable, and unable to return to Ireland. Seeks redress of his situation, 21 June 1819.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of papers relating to maintenance of the ball court at the Four Courts Marshalsea, Dublin. Includes statement from the 'The gentlemen confined in the Four Courts Marshalsea', to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting the sum of money needed for repairs to the ball court. States that it gives 'the only Exercise and amusement the Debtors of this prison can enjoy', 26 August 1819. Also letter from William Logan, inspector of Four Courts Marshalsea, to Alexander Mangin, chief clerk of civil department, Chief Secretary's Office, stating that as only a few prisoners 'play rackets', he cannot recommend any expenditure on such repairs whilst, 'accommodation for the poor is so extremely bad', 28 August 1819. Also memorandum of Dr Edward Trevor, medical superintendent of convicts and prisoners, commenting on the state of repair of the ball court, and suggesting that the work should be carried out, 30 August 1819. Also note by Dublin Castle official, instructing that the repairs should be carried out.
