TITLE: |
Petition of inhabitants and traders of Galway, requesting the stationing of a revenue ship in Galway Bay to protect Irish fishing from piracy |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from James Daly, Dunsandle, County Galway, MP for County Galway, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a petition from the inhabitants and traders of Galway, and urging government to adopt the measures suggested in it, 7 October 1819. Annotation of draft reply by Grant on reverse. Encloses petition of inhabitants merchants, and traders of town and county of Galway, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, requesting the 'exclusive' and 'permanent' stationing of a revenue ship in Galway Bay for the protection of Irish fishing from piracy. Refers to earlier petition of November 1818 making similar request. Emphasises outrages against fishermen in area, by those whose 'intention is to limit the quantity of fish brought to Market, thereby to enhance the price; and Monopolize the fishery'. Signed by 61 names, 2 October 1819. Also earlier letter from Arthur French St. George, Tyrone, Oranmore, County Galway, to Grant, 16 February 1819, enclosing a petition from the gentlemen and farmers of his neighbourhood [petition not present, but presumably relating to similar subject as above], with annotation by William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the dispatch of a revenue cruizer to Galway Bay for the protection of those employed in the fisheries. |
