File of papers relating to case of the Fountain family, Dublin, affected by fever epidemic. Includes petition of Arthur Robinson, 3 Beaver Street, Dublin, scale officer at custom house, Dublin, on behalf of Ann Fountain and family, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting that the eldest son of late John Fountain, a scale officer in custom house, be appointed in his place. Describes death of Fountain from typhus fever, leaving a wife and 8 children destitute. States that his wife is now 'laying in the fever in the same Bed with his remains and is not expected to recover', 8 June 1819. Also medical report from Dr John Peebles, medical inspector, reporting on his visit to the Fountain home at 26 Phibsborough, Dublin. States that Ann Fountain, who is heavily pregnant, and one of the children suffering from fever, have been moved to Talbot hospital, noting that 'Seven children remain at home without means of support'. Annotation on reverse by 'T' [Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant] expressing his 'horror' at this case, adding 'I hope some relief must be found for these poor Creatures'. |
